The Community Asset Project (CAP) Board is a non-profit organization comprised of 20 people, including youth from the six Cherry Creek School District high schools; Overland, Grandview, Eaglecrest, Cherokee Trail, Smoky Hill, Cherry Creek, as well as Regis and St. Mary's. These parents, school administrators, community professionals, and youth are dedicated to building developmental assets and creating a strong partnership between the Cherry Creek School District and their surrounding communities. Developmental assets are 40 common sense things that help youth grow up to be responsible, caring, motivated and healthy adults. It is a framework that helps all kids reach their highest potential and avoid becoming involved in health compromising behaviors.
The Cherry Creek School District's Community Prevention Project (CPP) (renamed in 1998 the Community Asset Project, CAP) has worked persistently over the past 15 years to increase community awareness and build partnerships that ensure all youth have the potential to reach both their individual and academic potential, by lowering youth involvement in health compromising behaviors. Our first accomplishment was to establish the position of Prevention Coordinator in conjunction with the Cherry Creek School District's Administration and Board of Education. First held by Brenda Holben - and now by Janise McNally, the coordinator facilitates numerous programs and trainings in the Cherry Creek schools as well as promotes many community-wide endeavors. Through our fund raising efforts (in partnership with First American State Bank and other key sponsors), CAP has secured and directed the placement of over $0.5 million to the Cherry Creek School District and community over the past 10 years. Funded programs include those that help youth make a successful transition from Elementary to Middle school, and from Middle to High School. We actively support the annual Youth Adult Summit along with funding other asset education initiatives.
