Introduction to Assets

image

Assets are common sense characteristics, skills, and experiences that help kids grow to be productive adults. To learn more about The 40 Developmental Assets just click through the slides.

Support

image

Support assets include a loving family and clear, positive communication. It means having adults other than one's parents a child can talk to. Yes, it takes a village, or at least a neighborhood. And, a school environment that fosters learning. Finally, parents that are truly involved in their child's life.

Empowerment

image

Do youth feel valued in your community? That's empowerment. So, too, is giving them productive roles that serve and give back to others. And, don't forget to make them feel safe - at home, school and in the neighborhood.

Boundries and Expectations

image

Youth need boundaries, and respond to high expectations. But, its not about just "do as I say", it's leading by example? Whether you're a peer, parent, or community member...are you a role model?

Productive Use of Time

image

Involvement in the arts, sports, music, or other extra curricular activities is a vital building block for adult success. Six hours productively spent per week helps ensure healthy choices by adolescents and a bright adult future.

Commitment to Learning

image

Are your children engaged at school? Are you leading by example - checking their homework, reading with them, getting involved with their education? Youth that read for pleasure at least three hours a week ultimately perform higher. Not just in school - but in life.

Positive Values

image

Telling the truth, standing up for convictions, a belief in helping others. Common sense right? So to is personal responsibility, and discipline. Make it a habit to require, recognize, and praise these on a daily basis through learning moments and by positive example.

Social Competencies

image

Learning what it means to be a friend, have empathy for others, and stand up to peer pressure. These are vital skills to teach. Youth that can plan ahead and resolve conflict peacefully turn into adults that can do the same.

Positive Identity

image

When youth value themselves, they make choices which reflect that valuation. You can make a difference by being someone that builds young people up and showing them the personal power they have over their lives.

Family Wellness Summit 2012

April 14, 2012

Now becoming a Cherry Creek Community tradition, the Family Wellness Summit announces the 3rd annual event taking place in April of 2012.

If you've not been before, it's time to mark your calendar and plan for a great morning of family fun and learning.  There are educational games and exercises for the kids, interesting demonstrations, free health and fitness exams, and great information - all designed to empower families toward greater levels of well being.

Just as importantly, this is an event that you can do with your children.  It's truly a family oriented activity - that young and old will enjoy.  Again this year, there will also be a 9Health Fair at Grandview on April 14th.

2011 First American State Bank Fitness Festival proceeds presented to CAP

On Monday, November 14, at the monthly CCSD Parents’ Council meeting, Nick Lepetsos, President of First American State Bank (FASB), turned over a check for $90,000 to CAP.  Nick thanked the school leaders for their help with promoting the event in their communities, which resulted in nearly 3,000 participants at the race this year.  Glenna Kelly from Kaiser Permanente, the Healthy Lifestyle sponsor of the FASB Fitness Festival, was there to express Kaiser’s continued commitment to the partnership with CCSD and First American State Bank.

CAP, as a non-profit partner of the CCSD, allocates the money to the CCSD Wellness Office to fund programs for K-12 that help all students reach their potential.  Janise McNally, CCSD Wellness Coordinator, gave a brief review of some of the programs that the FASB Fitness Festival proceeds have supported over the past 11 years.  These include Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (elementary and middle), WEB and LINK Crews (middle and high), Mini-grants for individual schools’ needs (elementary, middle, and high), Suicide Prevention (middle and high), and Drug/Alcohol/Violence Prevention (middle and high).  This year’s check brings the total donated to CAP from the FASB Fitness Festival to over $750,000.

Asset Champion Award

Two dedicated volunteers were honored as Asset Champions by the Community Asset Project during the Cherry Creek Schools Parents’ Council meeting on Nov. 14.

Linda Shaw, who has held dozens of different volunteer positions, including room mother, team mom, PTO president, Girl Scout troop leader and committee chair, was recognized for her devoted work on behalf of students, teachers, parents, and the community at large.

“In the role of PTO president she organized a Rally for Richard to help a family struggling under the financial burden of caring for a child with cancer,” said Steve Cohen, a member of the Community Asset Project Board. “Exceeding the goal to make $10,000, she was able to negotiate a year’s free rent for the single mother raising Richard and his brother.  To say she made a difference in Richard’s life is an understatement, but the positive influence she had on the community by pulling us together was immeasurable.”

The Community Asset Project also recognized Read Kirkpatrick, a long-time leader of Boy Scout Troop 127.  As Scout Master, Read was responsible for weekly meetings and monthly outings, including camping trips.

“The definition of “brave” is taking a large group of 12-  to 18-year-old boys away from the comfort of their home and parents, hiking several miles in the Colorado mountains carrying backpacks, and spending several nights camping in woods,” said Cohen.  “On these campouts, Read had to act as trail guide, teacher, parent, doctor, and most importantly mentor.  In addition to the fun of the campouts, Read made sure the scouts learned the importance of giving back to the community by participating in many service projects.”
