Asset Building in 8 Easy Steps

image

Developmental Assets aren't complicated. They're simply the basic life skills and attributes that are critical building blocks for young people's successful growth and development. Click through these slides and we'll share the eight steps to raising healthy, productive youth. You'll be an Asset Champion in no time!

Support

Support assets include a loving family and clear, positive communication. It means having adults other than one's parents a child can talk to. Yes, it takes a village, or at least a neighborhood. And, a school environment that fosters learning. Finally, parents that are truly involved in their child's life.

Empowerment

Do youth feel valued in your community? That's empowerment. So, too, is giving them productive roles that serve and give back to others. And, don't forget to make them feel safe - at home, school and in the neighborhood.

Boundries and Expectations

Youth need boundaries, and respond to high expectations. But, its not about just "do as I say", it's leading by example? Whether you're a peer, parent, or community member...are you a role model?

Productive Use of Time

Involvement in the arts, sports, music, or other extra curricular activities is a vital building block for adult success. Six hours productively spent per week helps ensure healthy choices by adolescents and a bright adult future.

Commitment to Learning

Are your children engaged at school? Are you leading by example - checking their homework, reading with them, getting involved with their education? Youth that read for pleasure at least three hours a week ultimately perform higher. Not just in school - but in life.

Positive Values

Telling the truth, standing up for convictions, a belief in helping others. Common sense right? So to is personal responsibility, and discipline. Make it a habit to require, recognize, and praise these on a daily basis through learning moments and by positive example.

Social Competencies

Learning what it means to be a friend, have empathy for others, and stand up to peer pressure. These are vital skills to teach. Youth that can plan ahead and resolve conflict peacefully turn into adults that can do the same.

Positive Identity

When youth value themselves, they make choices which reflect that valuation. You can make a difference by being someone that builds young people up and showing them the personal power they have over their lives.

Asset friendsWelcome to Assets Connect - the new and improved website for The Community Asset Project.  CAP's mission is to build developmental assets in our youth.  And, assetsconnect.org is our community portal for information, resources, calendar of events - and networking around our common purpose of raising healthy kids.

As with any web (or child raising) effort, Assets Connect is a work in progress.  We encourage you to check back often for the latest asset development tips & tools, along with a calendar of fun and educational events to attend as a parent, community member, or with your family.

Finally - be sure to sign up for The Asset Connection.  Its our email news.  We're not going to flood your inbox with emails.  We will let you know about significant events or information helpful to the well being of the community's children. And, you can opt out at any time if it's not delivering value.

The First American State Bank Fitness Festival 2009

The 9th annual First American State Bank Fitness Festival was a terrific success.  Cool weather provided a comfortable backdrop to the 5k run, with the sun coming out just in time for everyone to enjoy all the food after the race.  2009 saw a record number of participants as well thanks to all the great work getting kids involved in a summer-long fitness buildup to the event.  Elementary school youth who completed at least 26 miles of running over the summer earned medals at the end of their run/walk in recognition of their achievement.

The event yielded more records than just attendance.  In November, First American State Bank head Jay Davidson presented CAP with a record donation that will be used to fund asset building programs throughout the district.  Thank you Jay and Kristina!

Registration for the 2010 event will start later this spring.  Come to the Wellness Summit to learn more.
